ENHANCING INDEPENDENCE & FUNCTION THROUGH DESIGN
Increasingly, we are seeing a rise in lifestyle induced disease and disability in all demographic populations. As our society ages, we will soon begin to feel the consequences of living in a car-centric world that has largely been designed to accommodate a younger, healthier and more fit consumer. Never before has it been more imperative that we act with intention and purpose in designing spaces that promote health and wellness. In creating sustainable communities we need to consider how we can enhance one’s ability to remain living in their home in a safe and viable manner for as long as possible. This session will incorporate principles from both the aging in place movement and sustainable building practices to address the needs of clients and our communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore the principles of sustainable design that apply to the elderly or disabled
  2. Review concepts of the Aging in Place movement
  3. Learn what domains of health and function will affect our ability to live independently
  4. Learn how to conduct an environmental assessment of a residential setting to identify barriers limiting one’s function
  5. Gain an understanding of some basic home modifications that can enhance safety and functional independence
