ASID: Integrating faith into medical design
According to Wikipedia, the percentage of American Christians–76%; Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, and Muslim 4–5%; and 15% have no religious beliefs or affiliations.

In the 1900s more than a third of American hospitals were started by women of religious vocations per Say Little, Do Much by: Sioban Nelson. Now, this is not the case, but...

ASID: Printing skin, bladders and muscle tissue —How will OR design change?
Trials are currently being done with patients having bladder transplants that were created from their own cells and printed in a Dot Matrix-like printer (around $200,000 for the printer) and then surgically implanted in the patient. The true genius of the organ printing is the cells are taken from the person having the transplant, which greatly reduced the possibility of rejection. Imagine having skin tissue printed for a burn patient versus them...

ASID: HIPAA compliance and healthcare design
Sit down in almost any healthcare design meeting and HIPPA compliance will be brought up at some point. Yet while this starts a good discussion most people recognize the need for compliance without realizing what it means to how the space it designed.

HIPPA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, was created in 1996 to ensure...

ASID: The value of equipment planning
Acute care projects need equipment planning more than most projects ever could. However, after hiring engineers, architects, interior designers, and others, there seems little left on the table. Equipment planning is also perceived by the client as something that the A&D team should have been taught to handle or should be experienced in.

Think...

ASID: Wayfinding starts in the parking garage
Whether you are trying to get to the hospital for testing, have a doctor’s appointment at an MOB on campus, or rushing to visit a loved one who was just brought to the ER, wayfinding for the healthcare field starts when you exit your vehicle.

Hospitals have paid a lot of attention to the internal signage and wayfinding of their spaces,...

ASID: Managing the message of renovation with patients, staff, and families
Renovation is difficult. It causes a ripple of disruption through all levels of staff and carries through to patient and their loved ones. From housekeeping and maintenance staff, all the way through the change in traffic patterns that need to be communicated to everyone, nothing and no one is left untouched. Then, when you think you have taken care of everyone, you will find that you have missed one critical group that you never considered, that...

ASID: The Arguments for Solid Surface Flooring Versus Carpet in Skilled Nursing
I am always unsure how to answer the loaded questions from clients. You can see them aiming and then they fire. “What are your thoughts on carpet in skilled nursing resident rooms?” They either hate carpet or love it. There is no middle ground in this subject. You would think we were discussing if there is a God or who you voted for in the last presidential election.

ASID: What do you mean trash cans won’t fit in my custom casework?
As a past in-house hospital designer we were constantly battling the lack of thought that went into the flow of trash by the design teams.

An important piece of equipment a healthcare designer should consider in his/her planning that is often overlooked, is the trash can. I know what you’re thinking: she’s making a big deal out of...
