While this new outpatient care facility is officially designated as a Center for Health Design Pebble Project, its development as a prototype for future clinics represents the latest and best practices for patient-focused quality care required in healthcare design today.

Design concepts center on the team’s desire to create a facility where efficient, high-quality medical care can be provided within the framework of a healing environment. The branding of the overall design image makes use of natural materials indigenous to the region, while the building form creates a contemporary design with distinct architectural character.

Two central features share in their role as focal points for the clinic: A large, vaulted entry/reception volume and an adjacent healing garden. A history wall incorporated into the reception volume reflects events of the region, as well as the history and culture of the institution.

Patient flow and comfort are central to the organization of the clinic. Through interactive planning, the developmental character of the prototype transformed and reshaped the design multiple times. The resulting plan provides for a functional layout that supports and eases physical strain on workers, enhances nurse/physician interaction, and allows for patient comfort with clear and efficient wayfinding.

Through the use of sustainable design and green building materials, this facility has focused on creating a LEED™-certified, sustainable building capable of supporting the client’s commitment to ongoing improvement of services and quality healthcare delivery.
