Lowcountry Medical Group of Beaufort County Port Royal, SC

In 1997, a number of independent medical groups in Beaufort, South Carolina, formed the Lowcountry Medical Group (LMG). Their plans for the future included recruitment of additional physicians and projections for ancillary diagnostic services. They quickly realized they would need more space to make their strategic plans a reality. The group contacted Marshall Erdman & Associates to design and build their new facility.

To raise the needed capital to recruit physicians and build a new facility, LMG sold 35% of the group to the Medical University of South Carolina. With 53 exam rooms, 7 procedure rooms and 20 physician offices, the completed building provides ample room for LMG, as well as rotating specialists from the Medical University.

Marshall Erdman & Associates designed the facility to blend with the Lowcountry area’s traditional architecture. The red brick, white trim and shed roof all speak of the area’s architectural background. The palm tree boulevard and high-peaked drive-under canopy offer an unmistakable cue to the building’s entryway.

Inside, the two-story lobby and cathedral ceiling provide a friendly, sun-dappled entry and visually connect patients to the waiting areas on both floors. The building’s eastern orientation ensures a spectacular play of morning sunlight. The waiting areas are designed around a courtyard bounded by an elegant colonnade, opening the areas to natural light and a pleasant view of the countryside. Exterior cues to the building’s Lowcountry location carry over inside, including columns, arched ceilings, clean lines and spacious elegance.
