The new state-of-the-art UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Lakeside Addition features a 60,000-sq.-ft. emergency department that accommodates 100,000 patient visits annually, 10 ORs with patient support spaces, a 16-bed surgical ICU, and a Center for Patients and Families.

To facilitate seamless wayfinding within the massive floorplate formed by the addition of 270,000 square feet along the existing building’s façade, a rectangular “light well” was employed between the old and new structures. This structural respite includes a spacious, skylit atrium, allowing visitors to easily access spaces for waiting, learning, rejuvenation, and inspiration. A private, skylit consultation area for surgeons bridges old and new OR spaces.

The new facility expands the Center’s capacity to more than 100,000 emergency and trauma patient visits per year. Patient rooms, nurses’ stations, and support areas are generously sized, with specialized consultation and waiting rooms. Physically segregated pediatric areas in all departments ensure compassionate, sensitive care for children and adolescents.
