Dennis Monty
Director of facilities planning, compliance, and special projects, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston)

Who he is: Monty has spent his entire career—42 years—with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), leading facilities operations, developing space plans, and overseeing the planning and management of large construction projects.

Year in review: Facility managers are poised to take a bigger role in the construction and design phases of healthcare projects, as cost-control measures and built-in energy efficiencies grow in importance. Monty is a great example of why this is a good thing. “He’s the voice,” says his BIDMC colleague Brooke Sylvester. “He speaks to our senior leadership and understands the importance of launching projects.” He’s now in the home stretch of managing a three-year initiative to bring BIDMC up to ADA compliance standards, and he speaks frequently about this process to other systems to help them navigate ADA better.

What’s next:  Monty continues to oversee all major construction and renovation projects across the 3million-square-foot campus and its satellite locations. One such project is the construction of a 30,000-square-foot West Suburban Cancer Center and Surgery Center in Needham, Mass. In addition, he’s involved with the U.S. Access Board, serving on a subcommittee to create guidelines for accessible medical equipment usage in healthcare facilities.
