As part of the increasing need to provide high-quality orthopedic care to the residents of the Fox Valley in Central Wisconsin, Miron Construction Company commissioned Flad & Associates to design a new 50,000-sq.-ft. ambulatory surgery center and clinic. The new Fox Valley Orthopedic Surgery Center brings together three orthopedic physicians’ groups in an environment that reinforces positive patient outcomes and enhances the quality of patient care provided.

The new building features an ambulatory surgery suite with four operating rooms, an outpatient clinic with radiographic rooms, and an adjacent MRI diagnostic imaging suite. Space was also developed for future rehabilitation and rheumatology services. The building is sited to increase visibility from the road, facilitate patient access, and reinforce the clinic’s image and brand.

The design goal for the building was to enhance the patient experience by creating a comforting environment that would establish a visual relationship with the natural world. The entry sequence was designed to act as an icon for the building. It features soaring glass walls opposite one another, bringing in an abundance of natural daylight and enhancing the warmth of the natural materials, which are indicative of the local environment. The interior materials, such as wood and stone, enhance the public spaces. Color, floor patterns, and signage are used to support wayfinding throughout the building.

The building’s image recalls the heritage of the community, creates a new identity for the physicians’ groups, and reflects the modern quality of care provided.
