The renovation of the 3,700-sq.-ft. Interventional Radiology Suite at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in Manhattan was part of the hospital’s ongoing Radiology Department upgrade. The project team provided professional architectural and engineering services to create a master plan for the suite.

The central component of this project was the replacement of the existing angiography equipment with the installation of a new Angio/CT system by GE. Consisting of an Angio C-arm and a CT scanner, this state-of-the-art equipment merges two-dimensional imaging with volumetric imaging. By integrating these technologies into one exam room, the need for two separate procedure rooms is eliminated, allowing more efficient use of space, The radiologists and patients benefit from a safer, more time-efficient procedure. The architect’s experience with high-tech imaging equipment installation facilitated the system’s seamless integration into the suite.

Also included in the master planning was the design of a “closed” Angiography Suite. Public circulation and waiting areas were eliminated, and the suite was renovated to include its own reception, scheduling office, and waiting area. Special effort was put into the interiors to create a hospitable atmosphere. Wood-woven glass panels were used throughout the suite’s corridors, breaking up the ordinarily institutional hallways.

The completed renovation provides MSKCC with an Interventional Radiology Suite with cutting-edge technology in an efficient, patient-oriented space.
