Basset Healthcare Network  (Cooperstown, N.Y.) faced an outdated medical facility that could no longer accommodate patient demand and clinic growth for residents of Cobleskill and Schoharie County, N.Y. An inefficient layout and inconvenient location compounded the need for a new facility.

Working with MorrisSwitzer Environments for Health (Boston), the provider opened a freestanding 20,000-square-foot replacement health center that incorporates a patient-centered medical home model in June 2014.

The new $5 million Cobleskill Medical Office Building is located on the Cobleskill Regional Hospital campus and provides better adjacency to the hospital, augmenting the resources available to the clinic staff.

The physicians and clinical staff at Cobleskill and a team from Bassett Healthcare Network engaged in a series of live online design sessions targeted at increasing efficiency and tailoring the layout to the specific needs of the clinic users and staff.

Patients visiting the new building access the same clinical area each time from a central waiting area, creating familiarity with the layout as well as the staff. Registration and check-out services are centralized for staff efficiency and circulation flow.

The medical home is organized around four clinical pods of 10 to 11 exam rooms and four provider offices.  A central support area located between each pair of pods allows quick and easy access for staff.
