St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center has grown significantly over the last half-century, resulting in a sprawling campus with long travel distances, operating inefficiencies, poor wayfinding, and multiple locations for diagnostic/therapeutic services. The first project identified in the master plan was a new, centrally located building to consolidate and expand neurological and emergency services. The design of the new Barrow Patient Care Tower at St. Joseph’s was based upon the following planning objectives: consolidate neuroscience/surgical services; provide additional ICU capacity; create more efficient nursing units; provide for growth/expansion in trauma/ED services; create capacity for growth in other key product lines.

Consolidation of all inpatient neurological services into the Barrow Patient Care Tower improves physician and resident productivity and provides a family- and patient-focused neuro center. In addition, the design concept seeks to clarify and simplify wayfinding and circulation for patients, families, visitors, and staff while enhancing the image of St. Joseph’s to the community.

The Barrow Patient Care Tower’s expanded services include 80 intensive care beds, 64 acute care beds, and 11 neuro operating rooms—including a 3T intraoperative MRI, 44 PACU beds, 24 pre-op beds, and two diagnostic MRIs. The expanded Level 1 trauma center includes a six-bay trauma center, 44-station emergency department, four-room imaging center dedicated to trauma/ED, and 10-bed observation unit. In addition, renovations and/or building additions expand admitting and the main lobby, the clinical laboratory, the central mechanical plant, the pharmacy, and the sterile processing department to accommodate the increased capacity created by the new Barrow Patient Care Tower.
