Construction is under way on a $5.8 million renovation of the eighth floor of the Shoenberg Pavilion on the Barnes-Jewish Hospital north campus in St. Louis, Missouri.

McGrath & Associates is the general contractor and construction manager on the project, which began in July 2012 and will be completed in May 2013. OWH Inc. is the architect.

The project is divided into four phases, each encompassing a portion of the nearly 23,000-square-foot space being renovated. The renovation will create a new 25-bed patient division while relocating an ICU to an alternate location within the eighth floor.

A new rooftop air handling unit also will be installed as part of the project, to meet the new air and ventilation requirements.

A significant challenge for this project will be keeping the ICU operational throughout all stages of construction. McGrath will be implementing strict contamination isolation and infectious prevention measures to ensure a safe work environment and clean air quality for staff and patients.
