In a statement issued on Thursday, October 11, 2012, pioneering healthcare designer Jain Malkin announced that she would close her firm, Jain Malkin Inc., at the end of the year. Though Malkin makes it clear in her statement that she is not retiring, and that the staff is still available to current and new clients at "a different location," the move clearly signals a transition for the influential industry veteran.
A specialist in healthcare design since 1973, Malkin is the author of five books (with a sixth coming soon), including the first book on medical and dental space planning, and the first book to propose a research-based approach to design (Hospital Interior Architecture, published in 1992). A deeply passionate advocate for healthcare design who has worked hard over the course of her career to promote best practices in the field, Malkin has also penned dozens of articles, spoken at conferences big and small, and led a successful design firm that emphasizes evidence-based design and the patient experience, Jain Malkin Inc.
A longtime member of the HEALTHCARE DESIGN and HERD Journal Editorial Advisory Boards, Malkin has also served as a board member for The Center for Health Design and a founding member of the American Association of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID).
