Seattle Children’s hosted a site dedication ceremony to celebrate the first construction phase of the hospital’s expansion plan to move from a 254-bed facility, to a 500 to 600-bed facility by 2030. The event drew members of the community, patients and their families, Children’s staff, Senator Scott White, Children’s CEO Dr. Tom Hansen, as well as project partners Sellen Construction, ZGF Architects LLP, and the Seneca Group. Building Hope, the first phase of the expansion, will be completed in 2013.

Serving a four-state region including Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, Children’s launched this expansion to serve a growing regional pediatric population that is increasing faster than the national average. It will add 330,000 square feet of space to Children’s, and includes 60 to 80 additional inpatient beds for cancer and critical care patients. An improved emergency department will also be built if enough funding is raised.

Building Hope’s foundation will be poured later this month. In August, structural steel work will begin. Exterior and interior infrastructure developments start in October.
