Middlesex Hospital opened its doors to the renovation of a 4,393-square-foot Diagnostic and Imaging (D&I) Suite this fall. The D&I Suite, designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM), comprises a newly implemented 714-square-foot hybrid catheterization laboratory that combines the traditional diagnostic functions of a cardiac cath lab with the added functions for vascular surgery.

The D&I Suite includes three patient holding bays for preparation and recovery, a special procedures room, and all the necessary patient care and support spaces. The hybrid cath lab was designed in alignment with various departmental needs including those of cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and vascular specialists and serves various layouts for each scenario.

SLAM has worked closely with Middlesex Healthcare System for more than 20 years in the planning and design of a multitude of projects on their main hospital campus in Middletown, Conn., as well as off-site locations. The D&I Suite commences the extensive renovation of the hospital’s Diagnostic and Imaging department throughout the ground floor of the hospital.

Meanwhile, in the hospital’s North building the sixth floor was completed in January marking the completion of the extensive renovation of the patient bed floors. This unit includes 23 beds with 17 private rooms, three semi-privates, and one isolation room. The third floor of the West building also was recently completed and included full cosmetic upgrades to the hospital’s maternity wing including the waiting room area and nursery. Whiting-Turner Contracting Company served as the construction manager for the D&I Suite and renovations to the patient bed floors.

Middlesex Hospital also recently broke ground on a new Cancer Center designed by SLAM featuring a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The new facility is located at the Shoreline Medical Center in Westbrook, Conn.
