The Phillips Family Cancer Center, developed in partnership with The Southampton Hospital Foundation, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and Stony Brook Medicine, opened in May, bringing the first comprehensive cancer center to the east end of Long Island in Southampton, N.Y. A fully integrated site of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, the center provides radiation therapy and medical oncology services.

For the 13,800-square-foot, two-level building, design firm Blaze Makoid Architecture (Bridgehampton, N.Y.), took inspiration from the property’s legacy as the site of a Southampton farmer’s potato barn, incorporating a long, rectangular, and pitched roof and composite wood plank siding that’s reminiscent of aged cedar on the building’s exterior.

At the center of the building’s planning was the installation of a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. To accommodate the technology, the project team located the radiation treatment area on the ground floor, incorporating a 22,000-pound leaded cantilevered concrete door and prefabricated leaded concrete walls in the vault, which extends back into the hill behind the building.

The medical oncology department is accessible on the second level with its entrance directly off the upper parking lot. The infusion area is bright and cheerful with a cathedral ceiling that features skylights above 12 individual treatment stations with glass dividers depicting soothing images of waving dune grasses between the stations. Two shared treatment spaces enjoy an expansive floor-to-ceiling view of trees, while chemotherapy stations on the west side of the building overlook the year-round organic garden planted on the hill above the linear accelerator.

A light-filled multipurpose area at the opposite end of the second level functions as a conference room and can quickly convert into a screening room for live medical conferencing with Stony Brook University’s Cancer Center. Additionally, the sectional table and chairs easily collapse and roll into a closet, creating space for fitness classes and other wellness workshops.
