The St. David’s Basement Renovation included a conversion of the cafeteria and physicians’ lounge in the hospital basement into an upscale servery and dining area. The overhaul also included revamping the dish room, basement corridors, elevator lobbies, and conference hall. The project accommodated the objectives within the existing 28,451-square-foot space. Renovating the service level of a fully operational 1950s hospital and reconfiguring the servery and dining space for a 463,406-square-foot facility serving 1,900 meals per day was a challenge.

Moving from an existing ICU of 22 rooms in 10,990 square feet, a new unit was developed adjacent to surgical services, emergency department, and a cardiovascular care unit to house 24 rooms in 27, 208 square feet. To increase ancillary service response, the pulmonary therapy department of 1,270 square feet, and EKG/stress-echo department of 1,246 square feet were also moved immediately adjacent to the new unit.

This 28-bed inpatient rehabilitation center provides recovery treatment for brain injury, stroke, and other neurological disorders. Along with private rooms and an extensive state-of-the-art rehab gym, the unit features “Greater Heights”, a recreated small town center that simulates a community setting and enables patients to become independent once again. This “Streetscape” includes a replicated ATM, grocery store, bus stop, street light with sidewalk curb and crosswalk, as well as residential mail boxes.
