For Coviello Oral Surgery, a 3,300-square-foot maxillofacial clinic in Falls Church, Va., Forma Design (Washington, D.C.) was tasked with creating a sophisticated adult vibe, centering design decisions on the patient experience.

The oversized furniture and subtly textured cast-plaster accent walls of the waiting area set the tone when entering the office, as visual and tactile elements were an important part of the design concept. A sculptural concierge desk sits in front of a floor-to-ceiling graphic depicting a classical sculpture, which served as inspiration for the clinic’s brand identity. Private waiting and conference areas are separated from the adjacent main waiting room by curved textured glass panels, creating an interplay between the discrete areas of the office.

The perimeter patient exam room and operating rooms are wrapped by textured wallpaper and punctuated by glass doors that tie back to the reception area, allowing light to filter into the office interior. The large sterilization area is easily accessible by the clinical staff and adjacent to a patient care and checkout area with a separate exit, allowing post-operative patients direct egress without having to exit through the main waiting room. The project was completed in July 2013.
