With the recent success of his Overland Park, Kansas, surgery center, Glenn Goldstein, MD, wanted to expand his existing practice to the fast-growing community of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Dr. Goldstein and the design team studied his existing facility to understand its overwhelming success. An underlying reason was the large percentage of patients who came to the center solely upon having seen the building.

The design team created the concept of a “building used as a billboard” for their central theme. The site was located along the busy I-470 corridor, providing maximum visibility and exposure. An aluminum screen covers mechanical equipment fronting I-470, and the 10-foot-high logo creates a major design element and strong visual point, reinforcing the facility’s brand image and making it one of the most recognizable buildings in the area.

The objectives were to fit in, yet stand out, and reduce the clinical feeling of a medical building while conveying the advanced, cutting-edge healthcare services provided. The front canopy clearly stands out as the destination point, with the curving walls serving to soften the traditional clinical feel. Unique and interesting interior spaces feature natural materials, curved walls, accents, integrated art, soffits, and ceiling treatments, adding visual interest and creating a feeling of warmth.
