Three concurrent projects have equipped the community of Naperville, Illinois, with an enviable resource. The Edward Hospital Campus Development Project was undertaken to expand women’s and children’s health, outpatient care, community and staff education programs, and facilities for improved access, wayfinding and parking-all in response to a growing population that had propelled the hospital to 34th on the 1998 Modern Healthcare magazine’s list of fastest-growing hospitals.

On the south end of the campus, the 94,000-sq.-ft. expansion of the Women’s and Children’s Center and Outpatient Services delivers operationally and functionally, with a three-story atrium and generous lobby that creates a strong visual reference point for visitors. It also links directly to adjacent medical office buildings, an existing parking structure and a new courtyard that features a therapeutic fountain and landscaped garden. A relaxed outpatient environment was created through the introduction of hotel-like amenities, such as a fireplace, coffee shop, magazine stand, fish tank, deluxe furnishings and finishes.

On the north perimeter, a new 900-car parking structure and connecting link anchor the campus to the existing 144-bed tower and main hospital entrance, and provides a critical adjacency to the new 78,491-sq.-ft. Education Center. The Center provides a 150-seat auditorium, multiple meeting rooms and an executive boardroom with commercial catering facilities. All meeting spaces include data access at each seating position, digital “smart boards” and video conferencing.

Connecting the North to the South Campus, decorative paved walkways and landscaped site work lead patients and visitors in a logically organized, direct route between various Hospital destinations. The materials selected and patterns employed, together with effective site signage, allow a visit to the campus that is clearly delineated and memorable.
