The 14,000-square-foot UMass Memorial Cancer Center at the Marlborough Hospital has opened a new Cancer Pavilion. Tocci Building Cos. worked with The SLAM Collaborative and other subcontractors to complete a 12,000-square-foot new cancer wing and to renovate 2,000 square feet of existing space under an integrated project delivery (IPD) agreement.  The $12.7 million Marlborough Hospital Cancer Pavilion was the first healthcare project completed in New England under an IPD agreement.

The IPD team assumed full responsibility for the design, construction, medical equipment, and final operating capability of the medical infusion and radiation oncology care facility. The project centered on a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for radiation oncology, a CT simulator for diagnostic imaging, and 10 chairs for infusion oncology. BIM was used for design analysis, coordination, and logistics—including mapping out the requirements and instillation of the linear accelerator. Tocci used BIM to validate compliance with the strict penetration requirements for the LINAC vault. Prior to delivery, Tocci and the project team used BIM to model the path for the linear accelerator and LINAC vault, which determined the need for “out of sequence” casework and wall finishes.
