In answer to the fact that cancer patients will traditionally visit a facility dozens of times during the course of treatment, the University of Wisconsin Cancer Center at ProHealth Care in Waukesha, Wis., is designed with the goal of reducing monotony and supporting patients throughout their journey. The $72 million, 162,000-square-foot ambulatory care building completed in October 2015 and designed by CannonDesign was lauded by Healthcare Design Showcase jurors for delivering on that effort in numerous ways, earning it an Honorable Mention in this year’s competition.

For example, dynamic features and materials, such as a wall that connects two sides of the building and changes colors as one passes, offer visitors a constantly changing landscape. More control is also given to patients through details like operable windows, while complex visits are simplified with multidisciplinary day suites that house adjoining exam and consultation spaces where patients can meet with various specialists throughout the same visit.
