The $64 million emergency center renovation and expansion had to overcome several obstacles, including the Great Recession when the project was put on hold, and then a major acquisition that merged two health systems into one new entity.

The large waiting area features a variety of seating choices and the Beau To Go Café. When patients present to the emergency center, they are now triaged and placed by diagnosis in different pod specialties ranging from pediatrics and cardiology to behavioral health and general medical surgical emergencies.

The expansion and renovation more than doubles the size of the emergency center, making it one of the largest Level 1 trauma centers in the country. Four trauma bays (shown here) have glass sliding doors to provide increased flexibility and communication for staff, especially helpful in a mass casualty situation.

The emergency center has 73 private adult rooms, 10 private behavioral health rooms, and 16 private pediatric rooms, with glass doors and walls to provide quiet accommodations for patients and family members. These upgraded and added rooms are 35 percent larger than the former rooms to accommodate updated monitoring technology.

A dedicated MRI suite and two CTs are located inside the emergency center to expedite patient imaging. Point-of-care testing at the bedside includes portable X-rays, echocardiograms, and Doppler ultrasounds.
Facing an influx of patients that strained space, staff, and resources at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, owner Beaumont Health set out to redesign its emergency department. Among the project goals were to accommodate more exam and patient observation rooms and create space both within the existing footprint and through expansion.
The design by architecture and interior design firm HED accommodates 114 new exam rooms, 16 triage bays, and 4 trauma bays and upgrades 127 further patient rooms and 53 medical observation beds. The expansion and renovation project, completed in July 2019, significantly increases efficiency and organization while expediting intake, triage, and treatment for incoming patients.
