A 2-story light filled lobby complimented by an iconic glass tower created a unique identity for the Core Hospital. At night the Core Hospital is accentuated with LED lighting enhancing the design from the surrounding community. The lobby establishes clear orientation and intuitive way-finding. The 2-story lobby accommodates family-scaled seating areas and a quintessentially Midwestern interior garden space. Prominently expressing the faith heritage, the chapel’s illuminated art glass expresses the spiritual purpose within. A mural called “Murosity”, created by the Parkview employees and the community becomes the focal point of the space. Visual variety in ceiling forms complements the quiet backdrop of soothing neutrals and contrasting wood tones. Impressions of wood, textile and granite integrated beautifully for ease of maintenance and infection control. The inviting ambiance of a regional restaurant experience offers choice for patients, family and staff. The patient journey is enhanced by compression and expansion of space sweeping curves and changes in materiality. Collegiality and rejuvenation are supported in a setting analogous to an airport business class lounge. A colorful café and a boutique gift shop provide diversions and positive distractions for patients, family and staff. Understated elegance is reiterated with graceful arcs, elongated lines, and refined details. The lobby forms an embracing curve to welcome community with an illuminated landmark art glass. The Heart Hospital creates a striking element on the night sky along I-69 traveling north and south.

Parkview Regional Medical Center is a hospital with a community spirit, and a healthcare destination that reflects the heritage of northeast Indiana, promoting health, wellness and family-centered care.  Its healing environment focuses on quality consumer, patient and physician care delivery that is comfortable, nurturing and culturally sensitive.

The 1.1 million-square-foot replacement facility is attached to an existing specialty campus that includes Orthopedics, Women’s and Children’s, and Oncology services. The new construction represents the Core Hospital as well as the Heart Hospital, creating multiple centers of excellence.  Designed as one visually cohesive campus, the unique centers are individually expressed through a vernacular of distinct architectural elements such as the entry tower design.  In the evening, exterior lighting enhances the overall character of the Core Hospital as the iconic tower and lobby strengthen way-finding in the campus.  Along the highway, the Heart Hospital establishes another distinctive and recognizable landmark for the Parkview Health campus.

Walking inside, guests are transitioned into an embracing, family-centered environment surrounded by natural materials, soothing colors and timeless design. Monumental landmark art glass at the lobby of the Core and Heart hospitals celebrates connections to nature and the vibrancy of life.  Large expanses of glass maximize day-lighting and views to nature. Way-finding is enhanced through a single-loaded, day-lit concourse that connects the entire facility – existing and new components.

The public concourse establishes clear orientation and initiates a system of intuitive way-finding cues of articulated pathway, landmark form, lighting, material pattern, art, and signage as part of the healing experience.  Family members are an integral part of the healing process, and as such, ample space is provided for them in patient rooms. Treatment areas and waiting rooms allow views to nature, and families can make use of several dining areas, a medical resource center and wireless capability throughout the building. Decentralized nursing care brings families closer to the caregivers to encourage easy interaction, support healing outcomes and imbue a lasting impression that Parkview is a place for family – inspiring hope and confidence.

Parkview Regional Medical Center was delivered through an integrated delivery model with standard contracts.  The project team – working with Parkview Health – included Jones Lang LaSalle, HKS Architects and Pepper-Weigand.  The team participated in an open-book, collaborative process that enabled success and recognition for everyone across the project team, and encouraged their best efforts.  Despite external challenges to scheduling and construction, the hospital was completed one month ahead of schedule, $11 million under budget, and added $17 million in value-added savings, which Parkview invested in improvements to the new hospital and general campus.
