Architecture and design firm Perkins+Will designed the new regional cancer treatment facility at Valley Health’s Winchester Medical Center in Virginia. The facility consolidates the medical center’s cancer services, allowing for more seamless and coordinated treatment. In addition, the new Cancer Center promotes the healing properties of exposure to nature, through its siting along an existing lake and the design of a wheelchair accessible healing garden.

Perkins+Will has maintained a 10-year relationship with Valley Health and the Winchester Medical Center, creating a master plan for expansion and designing projects that included the North Tower patient addition, emergency department expansion, and South Tower renovation, as well as numerous other hospital renovations.

The new cancer center is designed with a distinct identity that encompasses a holistic approach to care. The two-story glass-and-wood entry to the Cancer Center is augmented with a green plant wall, and sustainable materials were used throughout. In addition to a new integrative care suite, the Cancer Center also includes a 70-seat conference room and a new glass skywalk, connecting it to the existing Diagnostic Center were patients can access medical imaging, lab services and genetic counseling.
