The Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (ALGH) Center for Advanced Care is an addition to and renovation of ALGH’s West Pavilion, an older, under-utilized building in a prime location on campus. The mission of the project was to “create a comprehensive, state-of-the-art outpatient facility that is recognized as a regional leader for patients seeking multidisciplinary cancer, advanced imaging, or breast health services.”

This high-volume facility required visibility near the campus entrance. However, the original West Pavilion was located behind a parking structure that blocked the building from view. By stretching the envelope of the addition and celebrating the main corner approach, this liability became a clear and visible asset.

To protect patient privacy, each department—Cancer Care Center, Center for Advanced Imaging, and Breast Health Center—has a separate and distinct entry that responds to the needs of the patients it serves. The main circulation spine, featuring a three-story glass atrium that facilitates wayfinding and provides natural light, connects the departments.

The interior design was inspired by the native prairies of the Midwest. Spring hues create fresh and optimistic spaces. Patterned glass provides privacy, yet allows natural light to enter clinical areas. Continuity of finishes throughout creates a cohesive image.

The revitalized facility provides medical and radiation oncology, imaging (including CT scanning, MRI, nuclear medicine, and general radiation), and breast health services. The Center for Advanced Care consolidates outpatient services and offers a comfortable, attractive, and welcoming environment for patients and staff.
