Perkins+Will

Firm details: With offices in 24 cities around the world, architecture and design firm Perkins+Will has had a significant impact on the healthcare scene over its 75-year history. The firm counts among its clients the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (Palo Alto, Calif.), New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Gundersen Health System (La Crosse, Wis.), Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore), the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Santa Monica, Calif.), and the Mayo Clinic Hospital (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Year in review: The firm racked up multiple awards this year for its recent work, from a variety of sources. Its Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (Boston) attracted a lot of attention—including ours—for its beautiful waterfront facility with endless daylighting, smart resilient and green features, and clever integration with the community around it. Spaulding was honored with, among other accolades, awards from the Boston Society of Architects and the Boston Preservation Alliance. In addition, the new hospital tower designed by Perkins+Will for Rush University Medical Center (Chicago) received the World Architecture Festival Award in the health category and the Distinguished Building Honor Award from the AIA Chicago Chapter. Also notable: The firm completed the University of Florida Clinical Translational Research Building (Gainesville, Fla.) last July, which earned LEED Platinum and is expecting to earn Living Building status.

What’s next: The latest big news to come out of Perkins+Will’s healthcare practice is Northwestern University’s selection of the firm to design the new 600,000-square-foot Biomedical Research Building for the Feinberg School of Medicine on Northwestern’s downtown Chicago campus, at the site of the old Prentice Women’s Hospital.
