The Angie Fowler Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Institute, inside Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, has undergone a complete renovation of the 8th floor outpatient and 9th floor roof garden. Designed by Stanley Beaman & Sears Architecture (Atlanta), the redeveloped 8th floor outpatient architecture  features a 60-foot-long, custom illuminated welcome wall that guides patients from the lobby to treatment  wings, where decentralized care team stations allow direct communication between staff and patients. Patients are able to adjust the environment of the treatment spaces through color-changing light fixtures incorporated into the ceiling soffits. Magnetic glass walls allow for personal messages as well as staff communication.  Frosted glass doors can be closed to create a more private environment.

The Angie Fowler Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Institute involves a highly complex and technical program with patient and treatment rooms, lobby and waiting areas, care team stations, consultation and meeting rooms, a USP 797-compliant pharmacy, and mechanical systems designed to serve the atmospheric sensitivities of the patient population.

Three key client principles—participation, collaboration, and information-sharing—guided the planning and decisions. Zones of interaction between patients and staff, patients and their families and friends, and patients and other patients are found throughout the project. Care team stations adjacent to treatment and exam rooms and custom glass promote informal communication between patients, nurses, and doctors.

On the 9th floor, what was once an exposed roof has been transformed into a sky lobby and an extensive outdoor rooftop respite and art garden, complete with a vegetated green wall, whimsical sculptures, planters, green hills, shady trees, and a multicolored glass canopy.
