100 Navarre Place is located on a very tight site in an urban setting across from the primary hospital in South Bend, Indiana. An outpatient facility with retail space and internal connections to the other medical buildings, 100 Navarre Place was designed within the context of an historic neighborhood, taking advantage of the views of the nearby campus of the University of Notre Dame.

The design concept draws references from the natural environment, such as the nearby St. Joseph River, and the many neighboring historic buildings. The building’s façade was designed to complement the historic district in and around the hospital complex. The hospital campus is immediately adjacent to this outpatient facility and is accessible both from a sky bridge and an underground connector. This immediate accessibility is helpful in allowing physicians and staff to move efficiently about the campus, thus better serving their patient population.

Physicians’ groups with complementary practice areas are located together on the same floors, thereby creating areas of excellence in healthcare. Reference libraries and patient education centers are located throughout the building. This collaborative approach allows for greater efficiency in providing healthcare service for the South Bend community.

By providing parking within the six-story structure, 100 Navarre Place offers convenience and close proximity for outpatients and their families, important for the winter climate of northern Indiana. The parking garage occupies the first three floors of the building, with medical offices on the remaining floors. Two sets of three-story atriums are stacked vertically through the building, bringing the visitor from the parking areas into an open atrium with views across the hospital campus.

In developing the interior design, much time was spent visiting and working with the various physicians and their staffs, to gain a better understanding of the needs of patients and the specific needs of each specialty practice. The interior design reflects a professional, yet healing, environment with natural light and soft wood tones used throughout.

Retail space for The Medicine Cup, a gourmet coffee shop and cyber café, is located at the street level. It serves not only the hospital staff and outpatients, but also the neighboring community. Later, a satellite pharmacy will be located within the facility so that patients can pick up their prescriptions before they leave the building complex.
