The Mountain Pavilion Addition secures Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s place in this growing region as Southwest Virginia’s most advanced healthcare facility. The eight-story, 149,000-square-foot wing adds three 12-bed intensive care units, three 20-bed progressive care units, a 20-bed monitored medical/surgical unit, three general and three vascular surgery operating rooms, four angiography rooms, and a 14-bed preparation/recovery unit, as well as support spaces and new mechanical and electrical rooms.

The Pavilion blends architecturally with older expansions, drawing disparate elements together in an attractive, welcoming unity—physically, operationally, and functionally.

The site at the foot of a mountain restricted the footprint and forced many unusual design solutions, yet offered an offsetting majestic viewshed that was captured architecturally for its healing effects.

Because the Pavilion was built on top of and connected to functioning hospital elements, it was necessary that construction activity be carried out with a minimum of noise, dust, vibration, traffic, etc. The project team instilled respect for the site’s total environment in all construction trades to avoid interfering with normal hospital activities.

Designers and builders worked closely with client staff and user groups, subcontractors, and vendors to realize significant time and cost reductions over original estimates, ultimately reducing construction by two months and the cost by approximately $1.7 million—savings that allowed Carilion to renovate a central supply facility.

The attractive Pavilion brings the hospital and its community new and higher levels of sophisticated medical capabilities that enhance the life quality for the entire area.
